Singer Sewing Machines

"Sewing made easy"

Singer is one of the most recognizable sewing brands in the world, with a history stretching back over 170 years. The older, all-metal Singers are beloved for their longevity and simple mechanics, and many are still running strong today. Modern Singers, however, are made with more plastic parts and are often considered “disposable” by many shops — but with the right care, even newer machines can keep going longer than expected.

Do you repair all Singer machines?

I service most Singer sewing and quilting machines, both vintage and modern. However, extremely low-cost “big box” Singer models are often not worth repairing if the cost of labor exceeds the value of the machine — in those cases I’ll give honest advice about whether repair makes sense.

Are old Singer machines worth fixing?

Absolutely. Vintage metal-frame Singers (like the 400, 500, or Featherweight series) can last for generations with proper maintenance. They’re simple, reliable, and easy to restore.

Why do so many shops refuse to work on Singers?

Many shops see modern Singers as low-margin, high-hassle repairs, so they’d rather sell you a new machine instead. I’m willing to service Singers, but I’ll always be upfront if the repair cost outweighs the machine’s value.

How often should Singer machines be serviced?

  • Vintage Singers: every 1–2 years if in use (or at least cleaned/oiled before use if stored for decades).

  • Modern Singers: yearly, since plastic parts wear faster and need more adjustment.

Are parts available for old Singer machines?

Yes, parts for vintage Singers are plentiful thanks to their popularity. In fact, there’s a huge aftermarket community for Featherweights and 400/500 series machines. For modern Singers, parts can be more limited, especially for the cheapest models.

Which Singers are “worth it”?

Generally:

  • Worth keeping: Featherweights, 400/500 series, early metal chassis zig-zag models.

  • Questionable: Recent big-box “plastic” Singers, which are often designed with short lifespans.

💡 Tech Tip from Your Technician:

If you own a vintage Singer, never run it without proper cleaning and lubrication — old, dried grease can seize the machine and cause unnecessary wear. A quick tune-up will make even a 70-year-old Singer hum like new.
