Elna

Swiss Design and excellence by your side

Elna is a Swiss-origin sewing machine brand, founded in the 1940s (via Tavaro SA). Over many decades Elna built a reputation for creative design, solid mechanical quality, and distinctive models (like the Lotus). After encountering financial difficulties in the 1990s, the Elna brand and rights were acquired by Janome in 2006. Today Elna operates under the Janome umbrella: many newer Elna machines are designed in Switzerland, but manufactured within Janome’s network in Asia. Because of this relationship, there is often overlap in parts, service knowledge, and engineering between Janome and Elna—though specific models, especially older Swiss Elnas, still retain unique components. When properly restored, vintage Elnas continue to deliver excellent stitch quality.

Does Precision Sewing Repair service Elna machines?

Yes — I service both modern and vintage Elna machines. Since Elna is now owned by Janome, most modern models are nearly identical to Janome machines under the covers, which makes sourcing parts and repairs much more straightforward.

Why do modern Elna machines look so much like Janome?

Janome purchased Elna, and since then, their machines have been built on the same core engineering platforms. While the branding, features, or cosmetic design may differ, inside they’re very similar. This is the same type of relationship as Brother and Babylock.

My old Elna is completely bound up — is it worth repairing?

Absolutely! Many shops (including QSV) will write off bound-up older Elnas as a “No Repair” because they don’t want to spend the extra time to restore them. I specialize in freeing and reviving these machines, and once properly serviced, they can still sew beautifully for years to come.

How often should an Elna be serviced?

Just like Janome, service intervals depend on use:

  • Daily/heavy use: every 6 months.

  • Regular weekly use: once per year.

  • Occasional/light use: every 18–24 months.

Are Elna parts easy to find?

For modern Elnas, yes — they use many of the same parts as Janome. For vintage models, parts may be more limited, but I have the experience and sources to track down or adapt what’s needed to keep them running.

Do Elna machines use special bobbins?

Most modern Elna machines use Janome-style Class 15 bobbins, making them widely available. Always check your manual, though — older Elna models sometimes had unique bobbin systems.

💡 Tech Tip from Your Technician:

If your older Elna feels “frozen,” don’t force it. Forcing a stuck machine can cause cracked gears or broken parts. A professional cleaning and restoration can bring it back to life safely.
